Can you put solar on a rented house or shop? What to agree first

Tenants can benefit from solar if the landlord agrees. Four points to settle in writing before you install.

Part of the complete guide: Solar for homes (start here)

Many families and shop owners in Trivandrum and Kollam rent. Solar is still possible, but the roof and the meter belong to someone else, so agreements matter.

Settle these in writing

  1. Landlord consent for roof use, structure and drilling.
  2. Who owns the system and what happens to it if you move out or the lease ends.
  3. Whose meter and name the KSEB or TNPDCL application is in; the connection holder applies.
  4. Lease length: payback is 3.5 to 5 years, so a lease shorter than that rarely works.

Subsidy

The household subsidy is for the connection holder at a residential property. A shop on a commercial connection does not receive it; see the small shop post. A landlord who installs and shares savings can be the simplest route.

Always verify. Subsidy, tariff and price figures change; confirm with the official portal, KSEB / TNPDCL and a written quote.
