Part of the complete guide: Solar subsidy (complete guide)
Kanyakumari is served by TNPDCL, so TNPDCL and TNERC rules apply, not KSEB. Homes can claim the central PM Surya Ghar subsidy of up to ₹78,000, and Tamil Nadu has announced an extra ₹22,000 state top-up for a 3 kW home (₹1 lakh in total). Apply through the PM Surya Ghar portal and TNPDCL, install via a registered vendor, and get a bi-directional meter.
How Tamil Nadu differs from Kerala
Tamil Nadu bills domestic consumers bi-monthly with a free allowance for the first block of units under current policy, which lowers the average tariff — so payback for very small consumers can be longer than in Kerala. Households using 300+ units a month (AC, water heater, EV) benefit most. Verify the latest TNERC tariff order.
New: Tamil Nadu's ₹22,000 state top-up
In its revised 2026–27 budget (August 2026) Tamil Nadu announced a state rooftop-solar subsidy running alongside PM Surya Ghar: ₹22,000 on top of the central ₹78,000 for a 3 kW home, a combined ₹1 lakh, with ₹50 crore earmarked. Industry reports say TNPDCL opened applications on its unified rooftop-solar portal from 21 September 2026. Budget coverage does not give a start date, so verify on the portal and do not pay any 'subsidy advance' to agents. Sources: DT Next, Energetica India.

Wind and corrosion in Kanyakumari
Kanyakumari is famous for strong winds (the Aralvaimozhi pass and Muppandal wind farms) and has a long salty coastline. Insist on wind-rated structures, proper foundation bolts or ballast, and hot-dip galvanised or aluminium mounting. Coastal installations in Colachel and Kanyakumari town need anti-corrosion hardware and periodic washing.
Cost and savings
Costs are similar to Kerala: ₹1.7–2.1 lakh for 3 kW before subsidy. Yield is excellent — Kanyakumari has among the highest solar irradiation in the region, often 4.2–4.6 kWh per kW per day.
