Part of the complete guide: Business, institutions & farms
Shops use most of their power while the sun is up: lights, fans, refrigeration, a counter computer and often an air-conditioner. That is the ideal profile for solar.
Why shops do well
- Daytime use means almost every unit generated is used on the spot.
- Commercial tariffs are usually higher than domestic ones, so each unit saved is worth more.
- Businesses can often claim depreciation on the system; ask your accountant what applies to your entity.
What PM Surya Ghar does not cover
The central household subsidy is for residential connections. A shop on a commercial connection does not receive it, so the payback is driven by tariff savings alone — typically around 3.5–5 years for a well-sized system.
Roof and rights
If you rent the building, get the owner's written consent and agree who owns the system if you move. See our Neyyattinkara shop case study.
