Part of the complete guide: Solar subsidy (complete guide)
Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, households get ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW — up to ₹78,000 for 3 kW or more. Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in, get DISCOM feasibility, install via a registered vendor, get net metering, and the subsidy is credited to your bank account.
Subsidy amounts
| System size | Central subsidy |
|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 |
| 3 kW and above | ₹78,000 (maximum) |
Residential Resident Welfare Associations / Group Housing Societies get ₹18,000 per kW for common-facility solar up to 500 kW (3 kW per house). Always confirm current terms on the official portal; the scheme is currently announced to run to FY 2026–27.
Scheme progress and state top-ups
PM Surya Ghar crossed 50 lakh households in August 2026, with about 14.8 GW installed and over ₹28,000 crore paid as direct subsidy (pv magazine). In Tamil Nadu, an extra ₹22,000 state top-up has been announced for 3 kW homes, taking the combined subsidy to ₹1 lakh. Kerala households can check ANERT and KSEB for any state-level support.
Who is eligible
- Indian citizen with a residential house and a suitable, shadow-free roof
- Valid electricity connection (KSEB in Kerala, TNPDCL in Kanyakumari)
- No earlier central subsidy for solar on the same connection
- DCR-compliant solar modules installed by a DISCOM-registered vendor
Step-by-step process
- Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in — choose state, electricity distribution company, consumer number, mobile and email.
- Log in and apply for rooftop solar.
- Get DISCOM feasibility approval.
- Choose a registered vendor and get a written quote.
- Install the plant (1–3 days) with DCR modules.
- Submit plant details and apply for net metering.
- Inspection and commissioning by the DISCOM after the net meter is installed; commissioning certificate is generated on the portal.
- Submit bank details (cancelled cheque); subsidy is credited, usually within about 30 days.
Common mistakes that delay the subsidy
- Choosing a vendor who is not registered on the portal
- Non-DCR modules or modules that do not match the portal's approved list
- Consumer name mismatch between electricity bill and bank account
- Installing before feasibility approval
- Paying a “subsidy advance” to an agent — the subsidy is credited directly to you
Loans and other schemes
Concessional loans (around 7% for systems up to 3 kW under the scheme) are offered by participating banks — see solar loans. Farmers should see PM-KUSUM. Check ANERT and state agencies for any additional state-level support.
