Existing systems and the PM Surya Ghar subsidy
The subsidy is tied to a new installation applied for on the portal. Systems already installed are generally not eligible retroactively. Ask the portal helpline if your system was installed recently or under a different scheme.

PM-KUSUM: solar pumps and farm solarisation
Standalone solar pumps typically get central assistance of about 30% of the benchmark cost, a state share (often about 30%) and the balance from the farmer or a bank loan. Quotas and implementing agencies differ by state, so apply through the Agriculture Department / ANERT (Kerala) or the Tamil Nadu agriculture engineering agencies.

Shops, institutions and industry: no PM Surya Ghar subsidy
The household subsidy does not cover commercial, institutional or industrial connections. Savings come from the tariff, and options include depreciation (taxable entities), loans and RESCO / pay-per-unit models.

Subsidy needs DCR modules and a registered vendor
Panels must be Domestic Content Requirement (Indian-made cells) and the installer must be registered on the portal and empanelled with the DISCOM. Non-DCR panels or unregistered vendors can void the subsidy.

Metering & billing
Reported: confirmKeralaApplies to you
Kerala: net metering for small systems
Under KSERC's 2025 regulations (billing changes from 2026), small systems, reported as 1–3 kW (up to 5 kW with a hybrid inverter and battery), use net metering: exported units are credited against your consumption.

Kerala: net billing above 3 kW
Systems above the net-metering limit, reported up to 500 kW, fall under net billing: you pay retail tariff for units you draw and exported units are settled at a low rate (reported around ₹2.8–3.1 per unit). Size the system for your daytime consumption. Confirm current limits with KSEB.

Kerala: existing net-metered systems keep their terms
Existing installations are reported to continue under the net-metering terms they were commissioned with (a grandfather clause). Do not change capacity or meter arrangement without checking how it affects your terms.

Tamil Nadu: net metering through TNPDCL
Kanyakumari is served by TNPDCL (formerly TANGEDCO). Grid connection and net metering follow TNPDCL / TNERC procedures: feasibility, installation by a registered vendor, inspection and a bi-directional meter.

Kerala: time-of-day pricing under net billing
Under net billing, peak-hour energy is reported to be priced higher (about 1.5× standard) and exports at peak earn more. Shifting loads such as EV charging and water heating to the daytime helps.

Kerala: bimonthly billing and fixed charges
KSEB bills every two months. Solar reduces energy charges, but fixed charges and duty remain, so a very small bill (a few hundred rupees) is the realistic floor.

Tamil Nadu: free units for domestic consumers
Under current policy, domestic consumers get the first 100 units free in each bimonthly bill. Solar saves money only on units beyond the free allowance, so very small consumers see a longer payback. Confirm the latest TNERC tariff order.

Check your system's output every month
A healthy system produces roughly 4 units per kW per day in Kerala and about 4.25 in Kanyakumari on an annual average. If your monthly production is more than 20% below expectation in a clear month, check for dirt, shade, a tripped breaker or an inverter fault.
