Is solar worth it for a 2BHK flat? Options for apartment owners

No roof of your own? Three practical routes for flat owners in Trivandrum and Kollam.

Flat owners often assume solar is not for them. It can be, with a different approach.

Route 1: Common-area solar through the association

Lifts, pumps and corridor lights run all day. A 5–20 kW system through the association cuts the maintenance bill for everyone. Residential associations can claim ₹18,000 per kW for common facilities under PM Surya Ghar.

Route 2: A shared terrace allocation

With written consent, owners may be given a section of the terrace for an individual system. Agreements, structural safety and meter connections need care.

Route 3: Wait for group metering

Rules allow shared generation to be credited across multiple meters in some regimes, but implementation varies. Ask KSEB for the current position.

Start with the Kollam apartments guide.

Always verify. Subsidy, tariff and price figures change; confirm with the official portal, KSEB / TNPDCL and a written quote.
