Is solar worth it in Kanyakumari? Sun, wind and the new state top-up

Kanyakumari has some of the best solar irradiation in South India. What it means for payback, and what the wind changes.

Kanyakumari gets more usable sun than most of Kerala: roughly 4.2 to 4.6 units per kW per day on average. A 3 kW system here can produce around 4,600 units a year.

The money side

  • Central subsidy up to ₹78,000, plus the announced ₹22,000 Tamil Nadu top-up for 3 kW homes, about ₹1 lakh in total. Verify on the TNPDCL portal.
  • The first 100 units in each bimonthly bill are free for domestic consumers under current policy, so very small users see a longer payback.
  • Households using 300+ units a month, or running AC, pumps or an EV, benefit most.

The engineering side

Strong winds mean wind-rated structures; coastal areas need corrosion protection. Read the Kanyakumari guide and coastal design post, or see solar in Nagercoil.

Always verify. Subsidy, tariff and price figures change; confirm with the official portal, KSEB / TNPDCL and a written quote.
