Wind, salt and the coast: building solar that lasts in Kanyakumari

Strong winds and salty air shorten the life of cheap installations. What to specify.

Part of the complete guide: Maintenance & performance

Kanyakumari has some of the best sun in South India, and some of the toughest conditions for equipment: sea winds, salt in the air and high humidity.

Wind

Ask for the structure's wind-load rating and the foundation details. Ballast-only mounting on a windy open roof is a red flag. Bolts should be checked once a year.

Salt

  • Hot-dip galvanised or aluminium structure; stainless fasteners within a few kilometres of the shore.
  • Salt-mist-tested modules.
  • Wash the panels every 4–6 weeks; salt film builds up faster than dust.

Why it pays

A structure that costs 5% more but survives 25 years beats one that needs replacing at year eight. See the Kanyakumari guide.

Always verify. Subsidy, tariff and price figures change; confirm with the official portal, KSEB / TNPDCL and a written quote.
